Intendente

Intendente is one of Lisbon’s most dynamic and fashionable neighbourhoods, having undergone significant transformation in recent years. Extensive urban renewal and rising property values have turned it into a highly sought-after area for investment and urban living.

Despite its central location, Intendente spent many years overlooked, with numerous historic buildings falling into disrepair. In recent times, however, the neighbourhood has experienced a remarkable revival. Major renovations, increased cultural activity, and strong demand for housing have driven both regeneration and rising property prices.

Located within the parish of Arroios—named the world’s trendiest neighbourhood by Time Out—Intendente takes its name from Largo do Intendente, an unusually shaped square just off Avenida Almirante Reis. The area has become a true reflection of Nova Lisboa, where diverse cultures, creative energy, and modern trends converge.

Intendente is particularly popular with students and young professionals, thanks to its abundance of coworking spaces, cafés, brunch spots, and independent businesses. The neighbourhood strikes a balance between a relaxed daytime atmosphere and a lively nightlife, offering what many consider the best of both worlds. Numerous new projects continue to emerge, supporting entrepreneurship and small business growth.

Casa Independente has played a key role in re-establishing Intendente and Arroios as part of Lisbon’s nightlife circuit. Set within a former palace dating back to 1863, it operates as a bar, restaurant, and live music venue and features one of the best balconies in Lisbon overlooking its iconic courtyard.

In addition to hosting dance nights and concerts, Casa Independente also screens open-air films and serves quality food at its Tasca Tropical restaurant. For a more underground experience nearby, Vlada Lounge—often considered one of Lisbon’s smallest bars—hosts intimate burlesque performances hidden behind a narrow corridor.

After opening several locations in Lisbon and Porto, A Vida Portuguesa chose Intendente for its flagship store. This beautifully curated space celebrates traditional Portuguese products, from soaps and ceramics to canned goods, all presented in distinctive vintage packaging.

The store is spread across multiple rooms filled with Portuguese-designed items from the early 20th century, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the country’s past. Its visual identity and product design make it a favourite among creatives and design enthusiasts.

Once considered a neglected area, Largo do Intendente underwent major rehabilitation in 2012, transforming it into one of Lisbon’s most inviting public spaces.

Following the renovation, several historic buildings were restored, including the striking Art Nouveau building now home to the 1908 Lisboa Hotel, a former Valmor Prize winner dating back to 1908. At the centre of the square, a flowing fountain and a wrought-iron sculpture by renowned Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos add colour and character to the space.

Held once a month at Taberna das Almas, Feira das Almas has become a symbol of Intendente’s cultural rebirth. This alternative market showcases emerging designers, second-hand goods, antiques, books, and unique handmade items, attracting both locals and visitors.

Thanks to its proximity to Lisbon’s most central neighbourhoods, Intendente enjoys excellent transport connections. The Martim Moniz, Anjos, and Intendente metro stations provide quick access across the city.

Frequent bus and tram services operate throughout the day, connecting Intendente to both the northwestern and southeastern areas of central Lisbon.

As a multicultural neighbourhood, Intendente offers a diverse and distinctive shopping experience. Anjos na Rua Market brings together street food, fresh produce, artisan goods, and second-hand items in a lively and creative atmosphere.

In addition to A Vida Portuguesa, shoppers can visit Retrox Vintage Shop for curated second-hand fashion and vintage finds. The monthly Feira das Almas also adds to the area’s alternative retail scene.

Located approximately 7 kilometres from the city centre, Lisbon Portela Airport is the nearest airport to Intendente and Portugal’s main international gateway.

The journey takes around 13 minutes by car, following the E1 or Avenida Almirante Gago Coutinho and Avenida Almirante Reis, or approximately 40 minutes by metro, using the Martim Moniz, Anjos, or Intendente stations.
