Oeiras

Oeiras is a municipality located in the western part of the Lisbon metropolitan area and is widely recognised as one of the most highly developed municipalities in Portugal. Its strong infrastructure, coastal setting, and economic vitality make it an increasingly attractive place to live and invest.

Situated approximately 16 kilometres from Lisbon, Oeiras forms part of the Greater Lisbon urban agglomeration. The municipality is an important economic hub, home to a high concentration of business parks, technology companies, and multinational headquarters.

Jardim Marquês de Pombal leads to the magnificent Palace of the Marquês de Pombal, designed in the 18th century by Carlos Mardel as both a residence and a space for official affairs. The palace served as the Marquis’s summer residence and is a remarkable example of Portuguese Baroque and Rococo architecture.

Inside, visitors can admire frescoes, paintings, azulejo tiles, and sculptural elements. The surrounding gardens are one of Oeiras’s most iconic public spaces, ideal for leisurely walks or family outings.

The garden regularly hosts plays, light shows, and concerts, and on Sundays, entry to the palace is free.

The Fortaleza de São Julião da Barra is one of the largest and most complete military defence complexes built in the Vauban style. Historically, it served to protect the Tagus River and the city of Lisbon from naval attacks.

Today, the fortress is the official residence of Portugal’s Minister of National Defence. Although famously known as the “Shield of the Kingdom,” the fort was unable to prevent the French invasion of 1808. Parts of the complex are now open to visitors, offering insight into its strategic and historical significance.

Parque Urbano do Jamor is an expansive outdoor recreational area in Oeiras and is often described as an open-air gym. It is an ideal destination for families, particularly those considering relocation to the area.

The park includes an adventure circuit with wooden platforms suspended among the trees, offering an exciting experience for children and adults alike. Two routes are available:

Parque dos Poetas is one of Oeiras’s most distinctive and meaningful green spaces, dedicated to celebrating Portuguese literature and culture. Spread across several hectares, the park combines landscaped gardens, walking paths, lakes, and sculptures with poetic references spanning Portuguese literary history.

The park is organised into thematic areas representing different literary periods, featuring statues and excerpts from the works of renowned Portuguese poets such as Luís de Camões, Fernando Pessoa, and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. This unique blend of art, nature, and literature makes Parque dos Poetas both an educational and relaxing destination.

Getting around Oeiras is easy thanks to frequent and reliable public transport. Bus services operate throughout the day, and affordable travel cards allow convenient access both within the municipality and to surrounding areas, including Lisbon.

Oeiras offers a wide range of shopping options. The main retail destination is Oeiras Parque, a large shopping centre featuring 175 shops, 28 restaurants, and a cinema, making it a popular destination for the whole family.

The nearest major airport is Lisbon Portela Airport, which provides extensive international connections. Cascais Airport is also nearby, offering additional access for private and regional flights.
