Campo dos Mártires da Pátria is located in the very centre of Lisbon, an area where property demand remains consistently high due to its central position, historical significance, and excellent connectivity.

Rich in history and centrally positioned within Lisbon, Campo dos Mártires da Pátria is a historic park located in the parish of Arroios, set atop a hill between the valleys of Avenida da Liberdade and Avenida Almirante Reis.

The park takes its name—Campo dos Mártires da Pátria (“Field of the Martyrs of the Homeland”)—in memory of Portuguese General Gomes Freire de Andrade and eleven companions. They were executed following a controversial and staged trial, accused of conspiracy and rebellion against Lord William Beresford, the British military commander who governed Portugal as regent during the absence of King João VI, then residing in Brazil.

Gomes Freire de Andrade, a prominent Freemason, was accused by Beresford of plotting to undermine British authority in Portugal. Following the executions, Beresford travelled to Brazil to seek expanded powers from King João VI, which were granted. However, these events triggered widespread unrest in Portugal, particularly in the north, fueling strong anti-British sentiment.

The execution ultimately became a catalyst for the Portuguese Liberal Revolution, leading to Beresford’s fall from power. Upon his return from Brazil, he was prevented from disembarking in Lisbon, marking the end of British regency in Portugal.

Located just above Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, Jardim do Torel overlooks Avenida da Liberdade and is surrounded by 19th-century palaces. The garden’s name originates from a Dutch family who once owned the land before it was transferred to the Portuguese State in 1927.

Thanks to its elevated position, the park offers stunning panoramic views over Lisbon’s downtown area, the Baixa neighbourhood, and the Tagus River. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy the shade of its dense trees and relax near the fountain area, which is often transformed into a small urban beach with imported sand.

Located nearby within the Arroios parish, the Lisbon Cooking Academy offers hands-on culinary experiences focused on traditional Portuguese cuisine. Founded in 2017 and led by chef Ana Viçoso, the academy provides a welcoming and informal environment where participants from around the world can learn, cook, and share meals while discovering Portugal’s rich gastronomic heritage.

Descending toward Avenida da Liberdade, you’ll reach Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, a charming cobblestone street lined with restaurants and historic entertainment venues.

Among these are the Coliseu dos Recreios, inaugurated in 1890, and the Teatro Politeama, opened in 1913. The Coliseu was designed to host a wide range of events and could originally accommodate over 2,800 seated guests and more than 4,000 standing spectators. The Teatro Politeama, built in an Art Deco style directly opposite the Coliseu, seated over 2,200 spectators.

Originally used for theatre and live performances, the Politeama began screening films in 1914 and operated exclusively as a cinema for nearly 50 years.

Just a 10-minute walk downhill from Campo dos Mártires da Pátria lies Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon’s most famous boulevard. Built in 1879 on the grounds of a former aristocratic park, the avenue marked the city’s northward expansion during the 19th century.

Today, Avenida da Liberdade is one of Portugal’s most prestigious addresses and among Europe’s most exclusive shopping streets. It is home to luxury boutiques, five-star hotels, embassies, and diplomatic missions, and is widely regarded as one of the most desirable locations in Lisbon.

The Fonte Luminosa, inaugurated in 1938, was built to celebrate the regularisation of water supply to Lisbon’s eastern districts. This impressive fountain is located near Campo dos Mártires da Pátria and the Arroios parish and is well worth a visit.

Set in front of a large grassy area, the fountain is rarely crowded, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sound of flowing water. At night, occasional light displays illuminate the monument, giving it its name as the “Luminous Fountain.”

Thanks to its central location, Campo dos Mártires da Pátria is extremely well served by public transport. Regular bus and tram services operate throughout the area, providing direct connections across Lisbon and to neighbouring municipalities such as Oeiras and Amadora.

Nearby metro stations include Intendente (approximately a 10-minute walk) and Avenida (around 12 minutes on foot). A notable transport feature of the area is the Lavra Funicular, which connects the neighbourhood with Avenida da Liberdade and helps residents and visitors navigate the steep terrain.

Lisbon’s public transport system is reliable and affordable, with single metro tickets costing around €1.72. Onboard tickets are also available, costing approximately €2.30 on buses and €3.20 on trams.

Campo dos Mártires da Pátria is a peaceful area, ideal for walking and relaxation. The surrounding streets are dotted with local shops, cafés, and restaurants offering traditional Portuguese cuisine and delicacies.

A short walk downhill toward Avenida da Liberdade brings you to high-end designer boutiques, including brands such as Cartier, Gucci, and Hugo Boss. Alternatively, heading in the opposite direction toward Martim Moniz Square, visitors can explore Mercado Oriental, an Asian gastronomy market located on the first floor of the Amanhecer Oriental Supermarket, offering flavours from across the world.

Located approximately 8 kilometres from Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon Airport) is Portugal’s main international airport and one of the largest in southern Europe.

Thanks to its proximity, travel between the airport and the city centre takes around 15 minutes by taxi or bus, making the area highly accessible for international travellers.
